How to Write an Affidavit for a Bursary Application

Guide to bursary affidavits for unemployment, household income and financial circumstances, including what information to include and when certification may be required.

Information reviewed 20 September 2026

A bursary provider may ask for an affidavit when a household circumstance cannot be shown with a normal payslip or employer letter.

What to explain

State who is making the declaration, the relationship to the student, the relevant financial or employment circumstance and the period it covers.

Keep it factual

An affidavit is a sworn statement. Do not invent income or employment information.

Supporting evidence

The provider may still request bank statements, proof of unemployment, social-grant information or other records.
