SASSA Appeal & Declined Status Guide

What to do when a SASSA or SRD application is declined: understand the reason, prepare accurate information and follow the correct appeal process.

When Can You Appeal?

An SRD applicant who believes a declined decision is incorrect can use the applicable appeal process for the month concerned. The SRD process treats declined periods individually, so an appeal may be required for each month you dispute.

Check the Decline Reason First

Before appealing, read the exact decline reason returned with the monthly status. Confirm that your identity, contact, banking and other application information is correct.

Prepare Accurate Information

Use your own correct application details. Do not submit made-up financial, employment or identity information. If circumstances changed, make sure the relevant records are updated through the proper process.

Appeal Timing

Appeal time limits vary by grant process. For non-SRD social grants, South African Government service information commonly states that an appeal to the Minister of Social Development should be lodged within 90 days after notification of an unsuccessful application. SRD appeals follow the separate SRD appeal process.

This tool helps you prepare for an appeal. It does not collect an ID number and does not submit an appeal.

Appeals are decision/month specific. Department of Social Development material describes a 90-day appeal period for social-assistance decisions; submit promptly and verify the rule that applies to your case.
